Like many Shopify stores, their first priority was to use upsells to quickly increase revenue and average order value. The Challenge
Aromatherapy Associates initially began running post-purchase upsells on their own with OCU Basic, but they weren’t getting the results they had hoped for. Even though they have an expansive product line with tons of great options for upsells and cross-sells, their upsell revenue was flat.

A Strategic Shift to Pre-Purchase Upsells
For the next 90 days, Our OCU Plus team ran advanced split tests to hone in on the offers and stages that drove the most sales. Through our ongoing funnel audits, we optimized their pre-purchase offers, focusing on variables such as:
- Offer Placement: Testing different upsell locations, such as on the product page, cart drawer, shopping cart and checkout pages to determine where customers were most likely to convert.
- Upsell & Cross-sell Types: Experimenting with bundles, add-ons, upgrades, etc. to learn which cross-sells performed best.
- Discount Optimization: Testing different discount structures (full price vs percentage off vs. dollar amounts) to find which type maximized conversions while maintaining the highest profit margin.
- Number of Offers Displayed: Adjusting the number of offers shown during the shopping journey to make sure it wasn’t negatively impacting the shopping experience or abandoned carts.
